Treatments

Treatment may include the use of clinical nutrition, acupuncture, herbal medicine and counselling or stress management. A comprehensive treatment plan including one or more of these therapies will be customized for every patient.

Nutritional Counselling

We have the ability to change may risk factors that stem from nutritional choices. I talk to every patient about what they eat on a daily basis, without judgement, and help them improve their diet in sustainable and reasonable ways. I don't recommend that every patient should exclude large food groups or follow extreme nutritional protocols, but discuss what nutritional changes would benefit health when appropriate.

Supplement Recommendations

I recommend the use of supplements in certain cases when appropriate, but try hard not to overload patients on capsules. No one wants to take 5 supplements 5 times per day, but they can be useful when used strategically. I am an expert in the field of natural health and I spend time with many patients talking about whether they are taking the right supplements for them at the right doses, and whether they might be helping or hurting or doing nothing. Lots of times patients actually leave my office taking less supplements than they came in with!

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a popular therapy originating from Traditional Chinese Medicine. This practices involves the insertion of fine needles in certain points on the body to balance the opposing forces of yin and yang. It can be used to treat a variety of concerns, such as indigestion, infertility, stress, insomnia and more.

Acupuncture is also used to treat isolated and acute musculoskeletal conditions (like muscle tension in shoulders), and can provide effective pain relief around sore joints or injuries.

Herbs and Teas

Plants from around the world are used for their medicinal properties and nutritional value in the form of tinctures, powders, capsules or teas for various purposes. Culinary spices can also be used as a form of herbal medicine in daily cooking practices. Naturopathic doctors strive to ensure sustainable harvesting practices for endangered plants whenever possible.

Counselling and Stress Management

I talk to every patient about stressors in their life that are affecting them, and help form a strategy to combat mental stress that can have a huge impact on physical health. I provide a listening ear and a safe space for patients to share their anxieties and what is going on in their life, which many patients find therapeutic in itself. I also refer to counsellors for treatments like CBT when appropriate.
